Tolvanin Merimies (Sailor from Tolvanen) — a small drypoint portrait by Tuulikki Pietilä (1917–2009), one of Finland’s most distinguished and influential graphic artists of the twentieth century. Self-published, Finland, 1947.
An attractive early work depicting a sailor. Numbered 3/15 in pencil at the lower left, and hand-signed and dated 1947 by the artist at the lower right.
Framed and under glass. Frame measures approximately 24 x 28 cm; image approximately 6 x 9 cm. Original backing with label to verso. The frame is a simple wooden one with a noticeable chip to the right edge near the top, a couple of smaller chips to the edge surfaces, and a few minor marks — commensurate with age and likely original.
Print condition: Very Good to Fine (not examined under frame). A rare and early signed work by an artist of major importance in Finnish graphic art history, and the life-partner and collaborator of Tove Jansson.
