Published by Holger Schildts Förlag, Helsinki, 1957. Hardcover. True first edition of Trollvinter — the sixth title in the Moomin series by Tove Jansson, known in English as Moominland Midwinter. Printed in Swedish. Jansson’s Moomin books were published first in Finland by Schildts, making this the original edition preceding the better-known Gebers Stockholm printings. Quarter cloth, paper-covered pictorial boards. Pp. 145, illustrated by the author.
Trollvinter marks a more sombre and introspective turn in the series. When Moomintroll unexpectedly wakes from hibernation in the depths of winter, he must learn to fend for himself and confront strange new feelings. Many readers and critics have read the story as an allegory for the transition from childhood to adolescence — among the most quietly powerful of Jansson’s Moomin books.
Condition: Very Good. Minor fading to the red cloth spine area; very minor marks to the boards; corners bumped, lower front corner split; upper board bowing slightly. Binding firm. Text block fresh, free from foxing and spotting. At the front endpaper, two former owner names along the top margin, the first of which has been scored through with two lines. A nice copy overall.
