Tove Jansson — Trollkarlens Hatt (Finn Family Moomintroll), First Edition 1948

Trollkarlens Hatt — the original Swedish-language first edition of what was later published in English as Finn Family Moomintroll — remains the most enduringly popular and sought-after title in Tove Jansson’s Moomin series. Published in Helsinki by Holger Schildts Förlag, 1948. Fine copies of this edition are genuinely rare.

1/4 cloth with illustrated upper cover, pp. 164, illustrated throughout by the author with vignettes and full-page drawings, including the map at the title page.

Condition: A small stain near the lower edge of the front cover and minor loss of the white background colour along the extreme board edges; otherwise the boards are remarkably clean. Some colour-fading to the backstrip. Previous owner’s bookplate to the front pastedown. At the title page, a well-executed ink drawing of Little My and a Hattifattener with an accompanying gift inscription — not the work of the author. The text-block has tanned as is usual for the period.

Exceptionally clean contents, entirely free from spotting, foxing or finger-marking. A Near Fine example of a very rare book.
