William and A.R.P. by Richmal Crompton. Published by George Newnes Limited, London, 1939. Illustrated by Thomas Henry. Third impression, issued in the same year as the first. Hardcover, original red cloth boards with black titles to the backstrip, pp. 256.
One of the most sought-after titles in the Just William series, published at the outbreak of the Second World War and featuring William Brown’s characteristically chaotic engagement with Air Raid Precautions — a vivid and humorous snapshot of the Home Front.
Book: Minor lean; covers spotless and bright. Top edge dust-stained or lightly aged; text block remarkably fresh, free from owner names, spotting, or foxing. Reading crease to the backstrip, pushed at the foot. Very Good or better.
Dustjacket: Bright, clean, and complete. Ancient sellotape reinforcements at the spine ends on the inside. A few small nicks at the weak points; a possible old chip at the foot of the spine may have been skilfully repaired. Looks superb overall. Very Good.
