Congolaise (Savage Africa). A Stunning, Cinema Lobby Poster, 1950

An original Finnish release poster for the documentary Congolaise (also known as Savage Africa), 1950.  Commissioned originally by the French Government to document the native tribes of French Equatorial Africa, the film was controversially re-edited for commercial release to feature prominently both explicit female nudity and gorilla hunting, making it, arguably, one of the earliest examples of what would later be termed 'Blaxploitation'. The film screened in Finland for the first time in November 1950 and had no further theatrical releases following its initial run. 

A2, offset printed by Kartapalvelu Oy, Finland, for Trinity Production. Measures approximately 23.5 × 16 inches. The artist’s printed signature appears at the right, centre. The imagery is both striking and offensive in equal measure.

Condition: pinholes to each corner, minor creasing at the edges in places; otherwise outstanding. For a cinema-used item this must be graded Near Mint. A superb example of vintage film advertising art in remarkable condition.
