Dated "Oct 85" and bearing her characteristic "Joy!" salutation, the photograph measures 12.5 x 10 cm. The signature extends confidently across the image into the borders — giving it a particularly bold and pleasing appearance.

Maya Angelou (1928–2014) was one of the most celebrated poets, memoirists, and civil rights activists of the twentieth century. Best known for I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings (1969), she was also a tireless public speaker and cultural icon. Signed photographs from the mid-1980s — a period of considerable public prominence for Angelou — are increasingly scarce.
