Published by Allen & Unwin, London, in 1977. First edition, first printing, export issue — printed by William Clowes and Sons and lacking a printed price at the dustjacket flap, as called for. The export issue is considered to have priority over other first printing states. Hardcover in dustjacket. 365 pages with folded map tipped in at the rear. Blue cloth with gilt titles to the spine and a rich blue-coloured top edge.

The Silmarillion was published posthumously in 1977, edited by Christopher Tolkien, and contains the mythology and cosmogony of Middle-earth from the creation of the world through the First Age.

Condition: Fine in Very Good dustjacket. The book is in excellent shape with clean white edges, free from foxing, owner names, or bookplates; minor shelf bumping at the foot of the spine. The folded map remains tightly folded without nicks or tears and is spotlessly clean. The dustjacket shows minor laminate chipping and creasing at the spine tips and corners; a tear from the top corner down the fore-edge of the rear panel, sellotape-repaired on the inside by a previous owner with some resulting handling creases along the upper area of that rear panel. No fading to the spine.
