Published by Art & Letters, London, 1919. Hardcover. First edition, first impression of Naked Warriors by Herbert Read, a collection of poetry and prose based on his experiences during the First World War.

Read served as an officer from January 1915 and was awarded both the Military Cross and the Distinguished Service Order “for conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty” in 1918. He later became one of the most influential British art critics and literary figures of the twentieth century.

Octavo. Original paper-covered stiff boards, red titles. 59 pp.

At the half-title, a previous owner has pasted in what appears to be an autograph signature of the author, cut from another book page.

Condition: Good. Covers lightly soiled and worn; splitting to the paper covering; chips to the spine tips; upper inner cover stained. Contents clean and free from foxing.
