Les Jeunes Visiteurs (The Young Visitors) by Daisy Ashford. Published by Mermod, Lausanne, 1927. The first French-language edition in book form — previously serialised in a French magazine in 1926. Translated by M. Sachs, with a preface by Jean Cocteau. Illustrated with woodcuts by Henry Bischoff, including 6 plates coloured by hand.
Limited to 262 copies only, of which 30 were hors commerce. Of these, 20 were printed on Auvergne à la cuve paper and numbered in Roman numerals from XII to XXXI. This is one such copy.
Bound in full leather with gilt decoration and raised bands to the spine; colour-dyed covers with elaborate decoration to the pastedowns; top edge gilt, untrimmed. Housed in a decorative slipcase with leather trim at the fore-edges. The original green wrappers are bound in and thus perfectly preserved. An extraordinary contemporary binding in Fine condition.
Very occasional single spots internally; minor offsetting from a couple of the coloured plates. An impressive example of this early twentieth-century classic.
