Black’s Tourist’s Guide to Devonshire and Cornwall, including the Scilly Isles. Published by Adam and Charles Black, London, 1855. First edition, first printing. Small format, pocket-sized. Blue-green gilt-stamped covers with a soft, faux-leather feel. pp. 103, with 2 folding maps and a 46-page catalogue to the rear.

One of the celebrated Black’s Tourist’s Guide series — compact, practical companions produced for the Victorian traveller at the height of the railway age, when the Great Western Railway opened the South West to leisure tourism for the first time.

In very nice condition. Very occasional single spots; the folding map of the Great Western and South Devon Railways has a short tear in the margin (image unaffected). Edges darkened, as expected for age, but the covers are spotlessly clean and bright. It is easy to imagine some Victorian gentleman retrieving this book from his pocket as he went about his travels in the South West. Very Good.
